Neat. Does it help with anything or have you not tested enough to tell?

I’ve only driven about 5 miles with it on. I need to close off the back and make a better frame (used some pvc I had lying around). I want to say it felt quieter not only because of aero but because it was reving lower at speed.

Looks interesting.

Here’s an idea, get some plastic tubing and somehow make a frame out of that, attach it to the stake inserts and then fill in the gaps in the plastic tubing with something and then cover it.

Yeah, make sure that frame is solid and that all parts are solidly attached together and to the truck.

Do you have sufficient data from beforehand to make a valid comparison?

Are you fabricating a topper for air-resistance purposes?

I would like to know how it works out. I've thought about doing aero mods to my last car but never did.

Kinja'd!!!0

In efforts to reduce resistance. I’m pretty sure I’m one or twohundred rpm down at 55mph but it could be placebo. I don’t have a tach.

Is 40 yards of duct tape sufficient? I have about 2000 miles logged on fuelly. Top highway was 24.1 no mods and fresh paint. Around town I get 21. my ultimate goal is a 30mpg highway 4x4.

I might use conduit but I need to find a cheap bender.

My ‘89 also had no tach. Neither did my Civic, come to think of it.

Say, what kind of fuel economy are you getting in that Taco?

Kinja'd!!! Slant6 > Dr. Zoidberg - RIP Oppo

Kinja'd!!!1

I’ll get to a computer and link my fuelly account to the post. 24.1 on the highway.

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s pretty good. My work Taco gets 23-25 combined, but my ‘80 is getting 21-23 combined, which unfortunately is as good as it will get with a 20R motor apparently.

Is your work taco a 4x4? I hear 2wd tacomas can get 40 on the highway with electric fans and aero mods.

Yes. Maybe. I don’t know, actually. 2000 miles of data is probably enough. Good luck!

Second gen Taco only has a 2.7 or the 4.0. Your gen (first) had the 2.4 and 3.4, the 2.7 was added after the first or second facelift of said gen.

I think Lowes will Bend conduit for free. You might have to go to the plumbing section. I know the store where I live bends pipe for free.

1st gen 2wd tacomas got the 2.4 while 4x4s and PreRunners got the 2.7. I have a 2.7. Same one introduced a year or two earlier in the T100.

Well this has lightness going for it over a traditional shell. We shall see if I get better fuel economy. This mathematically should do better.

They are actually different engines, apparently:

2.7 L 3RZ-FE I4 150 hp

2.7 L 2TR-FE I4 159 hp

Kinja'd!!! Slant6 > Dr. Zoidberg - RIP Oppo
05/16/2015 at 22:13

Kinja'd!!!0

And the 2.4 is the 2rz-fe. I feel like 159hp is really low for something as large as the 2nd gen tacoma.

It’s the most gigantic small pickup ever. Still longer than the ‘80 longbed. Cab is huge and roomy.

The 1st and 2nd gen bed sizes are within an inch of each other. This bothers me.

Kinja'd!!! TheOnelectronic > Slant6

Your RPM shouldn’t vary at all. There’s a solid link between the engine and the wheels, so the same speed in the same gear on the same tires will always give you the same RPM, unless you’ve got an auto and the torque converter on the Taco doesn’t lock up, which would be strange.

If you’ve reduced drag, though, the engine will be under less load, and that would definitely make it quieter.

Kinja'd!!! Slant6 > TheOnelectronic
05/17/2015 at 07:46

Kinja'd!!!0

That makes sense. I have no tach so I’m just hearing less load.
